It’s that time of year… when residents of the Town of Dennis head off to that hidden gem, the town blueberry patch off Fieldstone Drive. Grab a bucket or basket and savor an hour or so picking the large, succulent berries then head home to make a blueberry oatmeal crisp to savor with family and friends. Check with the Town of Dennis for hours of operation.
Not a Dennis resident? Choose from various “pick your own” farms around the Cape. Hokum Rock Farm will be opening soon. The Blueberry Bog on Spring Hill Road offers another option; Holbrook House in Yarmouthport is yet another venue.
Feeling really adventurous and cultivating the urge to live off the land? From Blueberry Hill in Sagamore to the scrub of the lower Cape, wild low bush blueberries carpet the Cape’s nooks and crannies. Dwarfed by their larger, high bush cousins, it requires a bit of patience to fill your basket with the tiny berries–but one taste and you’ll agree, it’s worth the extra effort. Please do respect the rights of Cape Cod property owners in your “hunting,” or consult the applicable Conservation Commission for proper etiquette in harvesting wild berries.
